5 Smooth Stones - 5 Powerful Truths

1 Samuel 17:40-51

40 And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine. 41 And the Philistine came on and drew near unto David; and the man that bare the shield went before him. 42 And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance. 43 And the Philistine said unto David, Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 44 And the Philistine said to David, come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field.

45 Then said David to the Philistine, thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. 46 This day will the Lord deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcasses of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. 47 And all this assembly shall know that the Lord saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the Lord's, and he will give you into our hands.

48 And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came, and drew nigh to meet David, that David hastened, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine. 49 And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth. 50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David. 51 Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled.

Ephesians 6:12

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

We don’t fight a giant of flesh and blood. Our struggle is with an enemy far more powerful than a giant. So, what do the five smooth stones of David symbolize for us? How can I use them effectively against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of darkness, and against spiritual wickedness?
Here are what I believe these 5 smooth stones should represent in the life of the child of God. The first stone can represent the fact that you are CALLED.

“God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.” – 1 Corinthians 1:9

“But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;” – 1 Peter 1:15

“That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory.” – 1 Thessalonians 2:12

“For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.” – Galatians 5:13

Second, that you are CHOSEN.

“Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The LORD hath not chosen these.” 1 Samuel 16:10

“11And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, there remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither. 12And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he. 13Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So, Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.” – 1 Samuel 16:11-13

“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light:” – 1 Peter 2:9

“Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.” – John 15:16

Thirdly that we are ANOINTED.

“Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward.” 1 Samuel 16:13

“Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God;” 2 Corinthians 1:21

“But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.” – 1 John 2:27

Fourth, child of God, you are SENT.

David was on the battle scene by divine direction: he had been sent there by his father, but his steps were ordered by the Lord. And David knew it.

“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way.” – Psalms 37:23

“Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him.” – John 3:28

John the Baptist knew it.

“Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.’ – John 20:21

The Apostles knew it. It says he had told them more than once. Jesus made sure they knew it. And we need to know it as well.

The last stone, the last defense against our enemies, the most powerful weapon in the believer’s arsenal – WE ARE NOT ALONE!

“16 At my first answer no man stood with me, but all men forsook me: I pray God that it may not be laid to their charge. 17Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.” – 1 Timothy 4:16-17

“Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.” – 1 John 4:4

The enemy of your soul is going to come at you, like Peter warned, as a roaring lion seeking to devour you. The devil wants to sift you, to weaken you, to make you feel unworthy of the sacrifice that Jesus made so that you could be free, and to devour you. So often he succeeds because we are unaware that God has called us, he has chosen us, sent us, anointed us, and stands and fights for us. If we could just grasp these five powerful truths, the devil loses any power he has to torment us.
So how do we get a hold of these truths? Let the Holy Ghost get a hold of us! Instead of being obsessed with this world, we need to get possessed by God. We need to stop leaving Jesus at the door of the church on Sundays and Wednesdays, and allow him to take up residence in us.

It is the Holy Ghost that testifies to us daily, you are called!

It is the Holy Ghost that drives us to be holy, because we are chosen!

It is the Holy Ghost that drives us to proclaim truth to the sinful world around us, real truth and not a watered down politically correct powerless version, but a life sustaining, soul saving gospel – because we are sent!

It is the Holy Ghost that reminds us that we are anointed, set apart for the Lord’s use, and these signs follow them that believe. So, by faith we lay hands on the sick and they recover, we cast out demons in the name of Jesus, and we speak with new tongues!

It is the presence of the Holy Ghost living in us that awakens us to Emmanuel, God with us!

The devil can’t touch me, the devil doesn’t dictate my joy – It is the God in me that has set my feet upon the rock, the name of Jesus, and I know whom I have believed in, I know he is able, and I know victory is mine forever.

The devil can come at me with any weapon he has, just like the old coyote in the road runner cartoons, all his devices will fail. He comes at me with ineffective weaponry, because I am armed with truth and I stand against him in the mighty name of Jesus! I am covered with the full armor of God, filled with the Holy Ghost, I am CALLED, I am CHOSEN, I am SENT, I am ANOINTED, I am NOT ALONE, and I will not fear!
